A nosebleed can be pretty scary, especially if you don't have them that often. But even those who suffer from frequent nosebleeds find them unnerving.
But a nosebleed usually isn't that serious. And, by using a few simple home remedies, you can usually stop a nosebleed minutes after it started.

Holding your head back isn't the best remedy for a nosebleed. Many people think the best way to stop a nosebleed is to hold your head back. But doing this will only cause you to swallow blood, which could cause nausea. It could also make you choke, cough, or gag. So, this is one nosebleed home remedy you should avoid.

Instead, sit up straight, with your head tilted slightly forward to prevent blood from running down your throat. You also shouldn't lie down on your back if you have a nosebleed. Gently blow your nose. Gently blowing your nose will help clear out any blood clots that might be preventing a blood vessel from sealing
naturally. Pinch your nostrils closed to stop a nosebleed.

Use your thumb and forefinger to gently pinch the soft part of your nose shut for five or ten minutes, breathing through your mouth. (Use a napkin to catch any drips that squeeze through.) This will almost always stop a nosebleed.

If your nosebleed hasn't stopped after the first five or ten minutes, try pinching your nostrils again for another ten or fifteen minutes. If the bleeding hasn't stopped, you should head for the doctor's office or emergency room.

Placing a cold cloth across the bridge of your nose will constrict blood vessels, and help stem the blood flow. Or use an ice pack. How to Monitor your own Blood Pressure

Your heart is a pump. When it contracts, or beats, it sends a surge of blood through the vessels, increasing blood pressure. This is called systolic pressure. When your heart relaxes between beats, your blood pressure decreases. This is called diastolic pressure.

Monitoring your blood pressure at home is easy to do. It's done with a sphygmomanometer. There are two main types: aneroid and automatic.
Make sure you have back support and a comfortable place to sit at a table or desk. Place your feet flat on the floor and rest your arm on a tabletop even with your heart. Stretch out your arm, palm upward. Place the cuff on your bare upper arm one inch above the bend of your elbow. Make sure that the tubing falls over the front of your arm so that the sensor is correctly placed. Pull the end of the cuff so that it's evenly tight around your arm. Make sure your skin doesn't pinch when the cuff inflates.

Automatic equipment contains electronics that sense the pulse wave under an inflated arm cuff. Automatic equipment minimizes human error and is recommended if you have hearing or vision loss. Most units are portable.

To get started, press the on-off button. Wait a moment, then press "Start." Remain still and quiet as the machine begins measuring.

The cuff inflates by itself on the more expensive models, then slowly deflates so that the machine can take your measurement. When the reading is complete, the monitor alternately displays your blood pressure and pulse on the digital panel. Be sure to write down your numbers. Rest quietly and wait about one to two minutes before taking another measurement.

Aneroid equipment includes a cuff, an attached pump, a stethoscope and a gauge. This equipment requires coordination and is difficult to use if you're hearing or visually impaired or if you're unable to perform the hand movements needed to squeeze the bulb and inflate the cuff.

To begin, put the cuff on. Then, place the disk of the stethoscope facedown under the cuff, just to the inner side of your upper arm, over the brachial artery. Next, place the stethoscope earpieces in your ears, with the earpieces facing forward. Rest the gauge in the open palm of your cuffed arm so that you can clearly see it. Then squeeze the pump rapidly with your opposite hand until the gauge reads 30 points above your usual systolic pressure. Be sure to inflate the cuff rapidly.

Stop pumping, and turn the knob on the pump toward you to let the air out slowly. Let the pressure fall 2 millimeters, or lines on the dial, per second while listening for your heart sounds. Note the reading when you first hear a heartbeat. This is your systolic pressure. Note when you no longer hear the beating sounds. This is your diastolic pressure.

Write your numbers down so that you don't forget. Then after 1 or 2 minutes, repeat the procedure to confirm your first reading.

1- Headset
The headset is the metal part of the stethoscope onto which the tubing is fitted. The headset is made up of the two eartubes, tension springs, and the eartips. All Littmann stethoscope headsets are set at an anatomically correct angle so that they fit correctly into the wearer’s ear canals. The wearer can adjust the tension to a comfortable level by pulling the eartubes apart to loosen the headset or crossing them over to tighten.

2- Eartip

5 - Stem
The stem connects the stethoscope tubing to the chestpiece. On the Cardiology III Stethoscope the stem is used to index, or open, the side of the stethoscope that the practitioner wants to use.

6 - Tubing
The Cardiology III Stethoscope has double lumen tubing – if you were to view a cross-section of the tubing you would see two openings. 7 - Chestpiece

Avagard Hand Antiseptic - Fast and Effective

A study performed by Jeffrey Palmer evaluated the use of Avagard compared with hand-brush scrub preparation for preoperative scrubbing in regards to inpatient and outpatient pediatric urologic operations.

Avagard is a waterless, brushless, and scrubless hand antiseptic indicated as a replacement for traditional preoperative brush hand scrubbing. It is composed of chlorhexidine gluconate 1% solution along with ethyl alcohol 61% wt/wt.

The study evaluated the first 550 patients where Avagard was utilized as a preoperative hand antiseptic and compared these 550 patients with a previous 550 consecutive patients had traditional antiseptic-impregnated hand-brush scrubbing. All patients underwent pediatric urologic procedures that were similar in nature. Patients were monitored postoperatively for signs of wound infection, and patients and the surgeon were monitored for side effects. A cost analysis was performed to compare the use of Avagard as a preoperative hand preparation and comparing it to the antiseptic impregnated hand-brush preparations.

The group found that the incidence of wound infection was not statistically significant between the two groups. There was one wound infection in the Avagard group and two in the hand-scrub group. All wound infections were successfully treated with a single course of oral antibiotics without any long-term sequelae. No side effects for the patients or the surgeon were noted. They did find that the use of the Avagard was more time efficient and cost effective.

The group concluded that Avagard is a fast and effective way to apply an antiseptic prior to surgery. It seems to be much more cost effective as well as time efficient when compared to traditional surgical scrub. In my opinion, if it is just as good and faster then why not use it. It may become extremely helpful for cases requiring a very fast surgical preoperative scrub such as trauma cases.

Results lower than 90% may be caused by excessive bleeding, lung problems, cigarette smoking, blood vessel problems, lung diseases such as COPD. Percentages above 99% may indicate that the testing was performed outside the pulse oximeter's limitations; re-testing may be needed.

What the Results Mean

One Hb molecule has the ability to carry up to four oxygen molecules. Therefore, one hundred hemoglobin molecules could carry a maximum of 400 oxygen molecules. If during testing, the hemoglobin molecules were carrying 380 oxygen molecules, the percentage of saturation would be 95% ((380/400) x 100 = 95%).
